The 5 Different Type Of Backpacks You Need

I think pretty much everyone has those memories of getting their first backpacks when they’re in elementary school. Picking out the best colors or what character & tv show’s were ‘in’ that year as you went into first grade lol

But I was also already traveling a lot at that age so my backpack selection included what was going to work well on a plane and really hold ALL of my stuff. I learned early that backpacks weren’t JUST for school.

Now that I’m old(er) my backpack collection has expanded even more to cover all the different situations I’m going to need one for!

All five might not be for you- maybe you don’t ever go outdoors, or maybe you don’t need to take your laptop with you everywhere. However, these are the 5 different types of backpack’s that I have found can get you through any situation.

The Bookbag

This is probably the one I personally use the most. It goes back to always needing to take my laptop with me places. These days as more and more people work remotely or for themselves it’s pretty common! When you’re just going out to find somewhere with wi-fi and people to get some work done you don’t need anything fancy. This specific bag is such a favorite of mine I did a whole post on it not too long ago🙈 The second set of handles to make it more of a shoulder bag makes it really easy to do all your other every day life kind of errands with just one bag. I also really love zipper pocket up front & the water bottle pockets on the side!

The Everyday Purse

It’s really become a trend over the last few years now to use casual backpacks as purses. I know it’s supposed to be wayy better for your health/body so I’m totally on board. Personally to go with my casual every day style I’ve found just a small kind of slouchy bag goes with most of my wardrobe. I also like to keep it small so it really just holds the necessities.

The Fancy One

Whether it’s for work or an ‘upper’ level of school it can be necessary to have a backpack that raises itself up. You can tell by the picture that I’ve had this exact one for a while😂
It has the appearance that can match events that require a little bit more of an upscale vibe, and match the outfits that go with them. I really like how deceptively big this bag is because the inside can fit my laptop, notebooks, accessories, snacks, etc. It basically carries everything I could ever need in a trendy outside package.

The Day Hiker

I love being outdoors, and one of the coolest parts about my recent move to Spokane is how close I am now to soo many different areas to explore. I’ve found that a bag in the 20 liter range is the perfect size for those day trips and easier hikes. It’s big enough to carry everything you’ll need for a short trip (jackets, water, camera, snacks, sunscreen) but not so big it’ll weigh you down or make you feel like you’re purposely making it harder on yourself. Even if you don’t ‘regularly’ go for hikes having an outdoor bag like this is just nice to have around for any time spent outside. Even if it’s just camping, a day spent at kids sports, taking the dogs on an adventure.

Shop:

The Backpacker

This is probably the least necessary bag because it’s only really needed for two types of occasions. A planned backpacking trip (ala Europe by train) or a planned multi-day outdoor adventure. This is the kind of bag you only get with a plan or a dream. It’s still nice to have around though knowing you have something that could both survive a long trip itself, and have the space to hold everything you need to for survival as well. Besides, who hasn’t dreamed of throwing together a bag and jetting off to backpack around some other country for a few weeks.

Which backpack type do you think fits your life best? Do you only need one that can be a purse? Are you like me and need ones with space for a laptop & work? Let me know in the comments!

  4. Well I don’t need a purse or a Fancy purse but I live and die by my backpack for my computer, books, etc while travelling or getting about here in New Orleans. Also I am an avid backpacker so having a great backpack for hiking or camping a few days or longer is key. I recommend you definitely get fitted for one at your local outdoors store. Even if you don’t buy from them, you should know how one feels and know what size you need to sit on your hips properly so you don’t end up with physical injuries. I guess I am kind of lacking in the Day Pack section. I usually just load up in my regular back pack but having a good day pack with a camel bag inside would definitely be more beneficial.
I was kind of shocked that you didn’t add a fanny pack. Being a Gen X Adventurer, I was kind of shocked when I saw tons of Millennial Travelers rocking a fanny. Guess retro is in!
