Early 2000’s #GirlPower Movies I Grew Up With

I consider myself pretty lucky in when I was born for many reasons and one of the fun reasons is the movies I got to grow up with. Just the other day I was found Miss Congeniality on TV and of course stopped to watch. This time though I really noticed how many important moments there were for girls. I LOVED the movie growing up but I never put genuine thought into the messages and life lessons they were giving me when I was young.

That’s what kicked off this exploration into putting together a collection of the movies that came out in early 2000’s that planted the #girlpower in my mind. These are the movies I adored when I was just a little thing, watched over and over and over again, that I now believe had a big impact on how I faced the world.

There’s so much talk now, and rightfully, about representation in the media. I want to see more female superheroes, more female friendships, more bad female movies that don’t matter and become cult classics. I do believe that there are a few of those movies that already exist though. Legally Blonde taught a generation to say “What like it’s hard?” when faced with doubts from everyone around you. Charlie’s Angels comes back time and time again to make women believe they’re stronger when they fight together.

These movies mattered so much to me when I was trying to grow up and figure out what I was going to be in the world. Let me know in the comments if any of the ones I’ve listed meant the same to you, or if there’s another movie from this era that was your #girlpower model!
