We’re getting into controversial territory here, but this is one battle I will fight. When it comes to book-to-movie adaptations I am ABSOLUTELY on the side of ~Read The Book First~
This does come with the admission that even before my love of movies formed I was an avid book-lover. My whole family is a bunch of readers which means I really had no hope lol. I picked up on it young & fast and haven’t stopped since!!
I love when books are turned into movies. Imagining characters and places is great don’t get me wrong, but there is nothing like actually seeing it come to life.
This year is going to be a BIG year for movie adaptations! Some blockbusters, some indies, a lot of good times. But that means first we all need to get reading to make sure we’re ready! I’ve picked out the 7 adaptations I’m most excited for, so get ready to grow your Books To Read list for 2018!

Although the YA dystopia craze has died down, this series still has its big finale to go. Since this is the last in a trilogy make sure to catch up on the previous books & movies first!

2. Annihilation (Watch Trailer)
Release Date: February 23
Starring: Natalie Portman, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson
A female-led Sci-Fi action thriller sounds like someone threw a bunch of buzzwords together and created my dream movie. I actually just found out about it a few weeks ago. As soon as I read the summary and watched the trailer it jumped to the very top of movies I’m SO excited for!

3. A Wrinkle In Time (Watch Trailer)
Release Date: March 9
Starring: Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine
Surprisingly this is not one of the classics I had to read in school growing up. But whether or not those kinds of assignments were your thing, just a look at the cast is enough for any & everyone to give this movie adaptation a chance.

4. Ready Player One (Watch Trailer)
Release Date: March 30
Starring: Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Simon Pegg
I think this book is one of the few that will work much much better on-screen. I know some people find the ‘nerd culture’ of it off-putting but I personally loved the all the eighties references. You can tell by the trailer that they’re going big with it, and with a story based in virtual reality you have to, so I think it’s going to be a really fun movie.

5. Where’d You Go, Bernadette
Release Date: May 11Â August 16, 2019Â
Starring: Cate Blanchett, Kristin Wiig
For a story about a missing mom, this book is surprisingly fun & light-hearted. One of my favorite things though is the fact that I genuinely couldn’t guess what had happened and how it would turn out! It’s always nice when a story can truly surprise you, and this is sure to be an easy but fun movie to watch.

6. The Girl In the Spider’s Web
Release Date: October 19
Starring: Claire Foy
I loved The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo so I’m glad they’re trying again to move the Lisbeth Salander series forward in film. And if you’ve been obsessed with The Crown lately, like me, it’s going to be really cool & exciting to see Claire Foy in a completely different kind of role!

7. Ophelia
Release Date: TBD (premiering @ Sundance in January)
Starring: Daisy Ridley, Tom Felton, Naomi Watts
I have this thing where the second Shakespeare is mentioned I’m immediately hooked. It’s maybe not so weird now, but it was probably a little odd when 8-year-old me first became obsessed. This story takes the classic of Hamlet, but tells it from Ophelia’s point of view. So if you’re a Shakespeare nerd like me, or just want to see Daisy Ridley in something different, read the book and keep an eye out for more release information to come!

I was always skecptial reading books that turn into movies. I either never happy with the book or the movie.
Oh, I better get to reading! I cannot wait to see some of these movies, and bet I will love the books, too!
Great list! Will use for our book club! Love going to a movie after we read.
I definitely agree with reading the book first! I normally always like the book better. I’m excited about the movies Forever my Girl and Fifty Shades Freed! I love a good romance book! Lol
A Wrinkle in Time! Yes! I saw the movie preview and thought, I should try that book! I’m not a big fan of story books but that looks phenomenal!
I cannot WAIT for a Wrinkle In Time! I eagerly waiting for the soundtrack to come out because that remix of Sweet Dreams – SO. GOOD.
Thanks for the good read!
Best,
Idora
